About the Project
There are an estimated 200 million stray dogs worldwide, living vastly different lives depending on geography, culture, and access to care. While some are informally protected within their communities, many remain invisible, facing hunger, illness, abandonment, and neglect.
No Dog Left Behind - Dog Sanctuaries Around the World is an ongoing photo-documentary project by photographer Angelica Briones, documenting the places and people working to change these dogs’ outcomes.
Process
While traveling, I am often followed by stray dogs. These brief encounters became the foundation for this project.
I visit dog sanctuaries across the globe, collaborating closely with founders and caretakers to document daily life within these spaces: medical care, recovery, routine, exhaustion, joy, and the emotional labor required to sustain them. Though each sanctuary differs in size and resources, all share a common purpose: to offer dogs a place to heal, regain trust, and, when possible, find permanent homes.

Why it Matters
After each visit, I share the photographs with the sanctuaries for outreach, fundraising, and education.
As the project grows, it extends beyond documentation through a public-facing platform that connects people directly to these sanctuaries, encouraging learning, intentional travel, and direct assistance. Through public installations in New York City, fine art print sales, and an evolving online archive, the project works to increase visibility and strengthen pathways for support.
Dog Sanctuaries Around the World is a living archive of care and resilience, where dogs’ stories can move from survival to dignity, and from neglect to belonging.
About the Photographer
Angelica is a Peruvian-born and NYC-raised visual story-teller and self-taught photographer with a Visual Storytelling certificate from the International Center of Photography. Angelica combines her artistic expressions of photography and writing with her passions for culture, animals, and travel.
Angelica’s photo work explores the love and connection that humans have with others, as well as with their culture, traditions, and experiences. She intends for her audience to view her images as relatable, as well as an opportunity to understand, learn and empathize with experiences beyond their own.
Her photography has been exhibited in one of NY’s biggest open air photography exhibitions, Photoville, two years in a row, as well as recognized by Forbes with a second place mention in the 2025 Dog Photo Awards documentary category. Her photo series have also been displayed in restaurants and cafés in NY. Passionate about animal welfare, she is especially dedicated to telling dogs' stories and advocating for them through photography.
