In a small, welcoming neighborhood in Cuenca, Ecuador, where the equatorial sun warms everything it touches, even on the coldest mornings, lives Peluditos Cuenca.
This grassroots sanctuary is home to 64 dogs, all cared for by its founder, Marta, within the bounds of her spacious backyard. Thoughtfully divided into two sections: on one side, the younger, more rambunctious dogs run and play, while on the other, the older, calmer, and more fragile ones rest and recover.
Sustained entirely through donations, the sanctuary runs on daily devotion and hands-on care. In this truly special sanctuary, each dog is known, not just as one of many, but as an individual, with their own needs, stories, and pace of healing. Marta gives every part of herself to her “peluditos.” They are never left alone. Errands are brief and carefully planned, only when someone can step in to watch over them.
Peluditos Cuenca is a true sanctuary for dogs who were once hurt, abandoned, and left to fend for themselves, now held in a space where they are safe, seen, and slowly and gently, made whole again.
