I visited Takis Shelter in Crete, Greece in the blazing hot summer month of August. And while the sun should have been the one to melt me, it was actually the dogs who did.
One after another, they drew me in, each with their own story of resilience and their own way of seeking connection.
Takis Shelter is home to about 600 dogs and 100 cats. Since 2014, Takis Shelter is a sanctuary that runs solely based on donations. It is a home to dogs who have been found in different parts of Crete with little to no hope of survival. A week before my visit, a mama dog and her puppies had been rescued. It was impossible not to feel the weight of what they had been through, and at the same time, the relief of what they had found.
